Food was not very good. We had the chicken and dumplings. We had this several times before and it was wonderful but this time it was tasteless and full of pepper and it was too hot to eat. However the service was wonderful.
Upon entering the Hanging Tree my party encountered a musty smell that assaulted our senses. We decided to stay and thought it might get better. We were wrong. Dead wrong. It was a smell we discussed the moment we got in. Was it death, taxidermy, or mold? Who knows. We had one beer and some jalapeno poppers because we felt bad. The hanging tree made me want to hang myself. Remember Goliad, forget the Hanging Tree.
Had dinner on a quiet Sunday evening. Only us and one other couple in the restaurant. Unfortunately, the experience started and stayed negative. The waitress had absolutely no desire to be there and continually made that clear!!! Everything was a hassle from taking our orders, to making our salads, to paying the bill. On top of that the food was either bland (mashed potatoes and cabbage) or over peppered (chicken and dumplings). When paying the bill, a car turned the corner in front of the restaurant and our waitress literally said "You better not stop or i will blow up your car." Long days suck, we had had one ourselves, but the level of hostility reached a level I hadn't seen before. That will be my last stop at the Hanging Tree Restaurant.
